Kevyn Sharp was born with a psychic gift, as well as a raw talent for magic. He lacks inherent magical powers such as many witches have, but he has a natural inclination toward spellwork, especially using runecraft. His mental talents grant him greatly increased intellect and mental prowess, as well as occasional oracular insights. He seldom sees the future, and when he does he has little control over it, but he's good at farseeing and scrying. Adopted at a young age, his wealthy parents saw that he had the very best schooling, even finding a school for wizards beyond the normal boundaries of their reality for him to attend. As a result, Kevyn grew up to be staggeringly intelligent, an excellent student of magic, and probably more arrogant than anyone would consider ideal.
Background
Kevyn is fairly sure he was born in Los Angeles, California, but the orphanage that helped him get adopted as an infant claims to have no definitive records, nor has he discovered any. What he does know is that as a baby he was adopted by a couple who wanted a child, but they absolutely did not want to deal with all the mess and bother of making their own. So, they adopted. They were neither the best nor the worst parents, being loving in a distracted sort of way and spoiling their son at every turn, making sure he never lacked for anything he wanted.
Since it turned out the boy had a supremely brilliant mind and latent magical gifts, this largely meant finding ways to let him explore those talents. As those used to having only the best do, they sought out the most exclusive experiences for him, and that's how young Kevyn became a student at the Wrosthorne school in Arcadia. He spent most of his childhood and adolescence traveling between the two worlds, but he definitely got a first rate magical education. He's still doing advanced studies at Wrosthorne part time, but he's at that point in his life where he's ready to leave home and seek new experiences.
Seeking what's next, along with a few cryptic visions, has led him to the Port-Au-Feu area, which is famous for its magic, mystery, and culture.
SKILLS
He knows a great deal about a vast array of subjects, thanks to his eidetic memory and ability to rapidly absorb information.
He's in decent shape and reasonably agile, though he isn't really much of an athlete. He certainly won't win any competitions based on great strength or exceptional stamina.
His senses are sharp and his wits very keen, so as long as he's paying attention, there's very little that he misses. At times, though, he isn't always disciplined about paying close attention to his surroundings, so he doesn't always get the peak benefit of this skill.
He's not the world's greatest charmer, but he does have the ability to be fairly charismatic when he wants to be.
Cosmology - Competent Level
|
He has extensively studied the nature of the worlds and dimensions, so he's become competently adept at navigating between them, at least sufficient to travel between Sangria and Arcadia.
He has a broad and extensive occult education, which has been supplemented by his own reading and interests. He is especially knowledgeable about theories of psychic abilities and runic magics.
Subterfuge - Competent Level
|
He has the intellect but not the experience to be Machiavellian, but even so he's fairly good at being deceptive or manipulative when he wants to be.
He has some basic experience with survival, but he's not especially fond of nature. Nature is dirty.
Sometimes, a little stealth can come in handy. He's not any kind of expert, but he has a little experience with legerdemain, pickpocketing, lock-picking, and stealth in general.
ABILITIES
Natural: Advanced Mind - Supreme Level
|
Kevyn has an intellect, mental awareness and reaction, and willpower that go well beyond the norms of human beings. He has an eidetic memory, allowing him to consume, retain, and process information with truly supreme ability. This does not explicitly give him any supernatural powers, but his brain is just far more advanced than that of a typical human. Part of that includes having some psychic powers, which are detailed separately.
Psychic: Clairsentience - Enhanced Level
|
While Kevyn does sometimes get vague glimpses of the future, he is not generally any good at precognition, the way his brother is. Instead, he's developed the ability to extend his awareness over a distance, allowing him to sense up to hundreds of yards away in an unfocused way, and if he has a sufficient focus to work with and enough familiarity with the target, when focused narrowly his range may reach hundreds of miles. He can read impressions from objects, allowing him to pick up flashes of insight or imprinted memories, as well as read books or consume most forms of analog information remotely. This talent does not extend to any form of electronic media. However, this does make him especially insightful when it comes to sensing and understanding magic.
Psychic: Mentalism - Enhanced Level
|
Kevyn can focus his thoughts to achieve more intrusive or offensive effects. He can influence weaker minds, implanting false emotions or memories. He can even fully dominate weak enough minds, though this tends to require enormous concentration and can be exhausting. It's much easier to plant subtle ideas or impressions. He can also, to a limited degree, focus his thoughts into weapons, sending out pulses of telepathic feedback that can harm the minds of targets in his immediate vicinity.
Psychic: Rune Magic - Enhanced Level
|
Kevyn is not a spell-slinger. He can't just wave his hands and get a result. His active powers are strictly psychic in nature, and he has no "active" magical talents. However, he has studied magic enough that he can craft enchanted runes, infusing them into objects or even onto people.
Each individual rune takes time to craft, and alone they tend to create simple effects, but much like programming a computer, enough runes together crafted with enough care can accomplish some very impressive feats. Essentially, it's a way of spellcraft that works through imbuing and enchanting objects rather than casting "live" spells. It takes more time and work, and it requires all magical "instructions" to be written in advance, so it isn't as adaptable in the moment as other forms of casting, but it can be very useful when used effectively.
At present, most of the runes he creates take the form of various magic equipment, as noted in his Gear Advantage. He has also been able to place a few on himself with the aid of his teachers, so he has a few permanent runes placed on him that grant him regenerative healing, resistance to illness, and other health-bolstering advantages. They also effectively arrest the aging process, so that's one less thing he has to worry about.
Psychic: Telekinesis - Basic Level
|
Kevyn is able to use telekinesis at only a very weak level. He can't usually lift more than fifty pounds at maximum exertion, and usually he sticks to levitating pencils or coffee cups. Most of the time, it's basically just a handy convenience, though he has gotten pretty good at shooting darts with it.
Psychic: Telepathy - Basic Level
|
Kevyn's talents also include limited telepathy. For most targets, his range is limited to line of sight, but for someone he knows especially well or shares an uncommonly close bond with, he may be able to reach much farther. At his normal range, he can also scan emotions and surface thoughts of unguarded minds reliably well, but those with trained mental discipline or psychic defenses generally have little trouble resisting him.
ADVANTAGES
Kevyn has crafted a variety of fairly commonplace magical implements using his runecraft, such as a few wands, sensory tools, and other implements that most wizards tend to have. Kevyn might not be a wizard, but he has a variety of helpful magical tools and objects available to him, many of them of his own design.
Many students of magic in Sangria study at the Queensmouth Academy. Kevyn's parents decided that it wasn't exclusive enough, so they sent him to magic school in the world of Arcadia instead. Kevyn is a senior student at the Wrosthorne school of arcane studies, where he's studying runecraft. He is not considered a likely candidate to join the Emberwing Order for a variety of reasons, but he has access to the school's facilities and instructors, which can be very useful for any student or practitioner of nearly any sort of magic.
Kevyn's adopted parents fancy themselves arcane scholars, though they're much more like magical tourists. They spend most of their time swanning around the worlds via magical means of transportation, so they aren't much of a presence in Kevyn's life. However, they do give him a probably irresponsibly generous "allowance," which enables him to live as lavish a lifestyle as he likes. He buys a whole lot of books.
WEAKNESSES
Kevyn is used to things being easy for him, between his mental abilities and his privileged lifestyle. When he really applies himself to problems, he's staggeringly good at getting things done. However, if something fails to capture his interest or doesn't seem important to him, he seldom gives it his best effort. In fairness, even his lazy shortcuts are often far superior to the best work of people around him, but at times this can catch up with him in unfortunate and surprising ways.
Kevyn is cocky and overconfident to the point of arrogance. In his defense, he's intelligent and gifted enough that most of the time he really is far more capable in many respects than any one around him. He has very seldom run into questions he couldn't answer or problems he couldn't solve, especially within the realm of anything remotely academic. He tends to not so much overestimate his own abilities as risk underestimating others, many of whom have equally impressive talents of their own.
Kevyn doesn't always have the best people skills. When he really makes an effort, he can actually do pretty well in this area, but he tends to put most of his focus on trying to get what he wants out of people rather than actually engaging with them wholeheartedly. Sometimes he almost seems to look at the people around him as annoyances or, perhaps, as experiments in progress. Without people to help keep him grounded and balanced, he tends to develop very poor social habits.
