Malverno will probably always be learning and trying to better himself in sorcery, but he's no slouch! He's always looking for something to enrich his learning, and he's always trying to make new friends.

Background

The uncommon product of a human and a being considered in the broad fae and demon family, Malverno always had a gift of magic. From an early age, he was determined to become a great magus, and he quickly sought out the learning available exclusively at the Wrosthorne Academy. After a few years there, Malverno began to work with the Emberwing Order at Archwizard Avethorn's encouragement. Having befriended the Archwizard's guardian, Noria, and having trained with Pepe, famous healer and companion of the legendary Luxuriol, Malverno quickly found a niche he particularly enjoyed: helping various beings in need.

On one of his jaunts to another world, he found himself in the city of Port-Au-Feu and decided to keep a doorway open there. After establishing most especially a tower in the wilds of the Faeriwood, he settled in for magical enrichment and experimentation.

SIGNATURE ABILITY

Archmagus

Though he can't maintain it indefinitely, and it will likely exhaust him beyond normal bounds, Malverno can tap into the essence of magic with the help of his heritage. With this, he may accomplish a major magical feat that might normally be beyond his capability. Because it takes so much energy and is so tiring, it's something he uses only sparingly, usually only in a time of desperate need where no one else can do what is necessary for the situation.

Malverno is experienced enough to craft potions with the assumption of success, especially if he has instructions of some kind. It's not his area of greatest expertise, but he's more than a neophyte, if not yet an alchemist exclusively or a master of alchemy.

With enough information and resources, Malverno can be assured to successfully perform or even create various rituals and feats of magic. With a large degree of experience in various fields of focus, he's something of an authority on occult studies.

ABILITIES

Power: Cambion - Basic Level

As the child of what might be considered a demon or a kind of fae and a human, Malverno possesses some inborn gifts that set him above the crowd. He is naturally tougher and stronger than a human of his size and build, he doesn't really age, and he possesses the natural ability to hover and, if desired, even fly. However, he cannot fly at particularly high speeds in most circumstances. He also doesn't strictly need to eat, drink, or sleep to survive, but without those things, he's not going to be happy or operating at full capacity since basic survival is not usually comfort.

Power: Divination - Basic Level

Malverno can look into other places, other realms, even alternate realities. He can forecast what is likely to happen by using various methods. All of this requires not only preparation and focus but also interpretation, and it is also an act that is typically easily disturbed. He's most insightful and successful in his own domain or a place he knows is safe and welcoming.

Power: Empathy - Enhanced Level

Malverno possesses inborn empathy to a degree far deeper than most. Though he also understands well how to read someone's mood and feelings, with this gift of his mixed parentage, he can manage a sort of emotional communication and even conversation. Comparable to telepathy, but with feelings and concepts instead of words, Malverno can turn this on and off at will. Though it can be used against him if he has it activated and receives overwhelming sensation, it typically can't be disrupted if he isn't using it.

Power: Homing - Basic Level

Wherever he is and whatever he tends to be involved in, Malverno can usually find his way back home, to some place he lives. He may not be able to find his way to anything else in particular, but he can at least find his way home.

Magic: Magic - Enhanced Level

Though he still considers himself a student of magic and probably always will, Malverno has learned well in his life. Malverno is attuned to magic in all its forms, though some naturally come more easily than others. He is able to channel power to make his will reality in a number of ways, such as common offensive and defensive spells, the summoning and banishment of various spirits and creatures, permutation of matter and energy to one form or another, travel between different locations and planes, and so forth. Limited by his physical form and the availability of magical energies, Malverno can sense and recognize the ebb and flow of such power, wherever he might be. As such a being, he is also especially susceptible to forces that especially affect magic and the magically-attuned. His power and focus limits the application of this ability, and his success depends on the number and potency of effects required by whatever feat he may attempt.

ADVANTAGES

Collection

On his journeys, Malverno often picks up mementos. Some of these have significant power or importance, though others are just interesting or fun items.

Companions

Familiars, companions, or best of friends, whatever you may call them, Malverno has two: a fairy corgi, Bee, and a tanuki called Professor Tanuki. Both are highly magical and will simply vanish into sparkles if in danger, disappearing into one of the magical in-between spaces. They are also protected by Malverno's wards, as he has bonded with them magically. Because of this, he will know if they are in need of him.

Both Bee and the Professor are extremely smart and can understand spoken languages as well as more subtle animal communication. The true breadth of the Professor's knowledge and abilities are not entirely known, but they presumably are similar to Bee's, with the added possibility of shapeshifting. Bee can fly, float, and hover at will, though he must have enough happy thoughts to do it well. He can accomplish cantrip-level magic and, as a familiar, can help to enhance and bolster Malverno's magical efforts. Both Bee and Professor Tanuki are able to sense magic and, usually, the nature of its user.

Bee and Professor Tanuki may be summoned to Malverno with little effort, since they are connected on a magical level. If necessary, Bee and the Professor may also be able to summon Malverno to them, though this is rare.

Friends

In his efforts to help living things and his enthusiasm for the small, the cute, and the downtrodden, Malverno has made a number of loyal and helpful friends who are always ready to help. They number among them a dragonet, a number of gelatinous morphopods, and an adventuring duo named Parsley and Chive. Parsley is a green dodo, and Chive is a corgi, both with some magic specialties including feather fall, teleportation, and healing between them, and both are experienced adventurers. The many other friends over the years are all varied in who and what they are, and which interests they have, as well as what kind of gifts. Malverno keeps in contact with all of his friends, and he can almost always count on each one helping him in their own special way. That's because he will also always help them if they are in need!

Resources

Malverno doesn't have to worry about money, and he keeps multiple residences over multiple worlds, which are kept secure, typically through magical means. He's likely to always have somewhere to go, at least, and he can even afford to follow whims sometimes, if he perhaps wanted to try his hand at running a shop or designing things, for example.

WEAKNESSES

Bind

If Malverno is bound, especially limiting the movement of his hands, and especially if he is also gagged at the same time, this can prevent him from actively using magic. Only spells and enchantments active on him when he is bound can persist, many of which tend to be fairly temporary and often specially for battle. If he should manage even so much as a gesture or a sound, however, he may be able to escape, so any foe hoping to stand up to a mighty mage should be aware of that limitation.

Distinctive

Malverno isn't physically like humans, in a number of small but rather noticeable ways. His ears come to a soft point, for one. He doesn't really age. He's kind of short. He can cover some of these features, but it makes him a very distinctive person when anyone notices them.

Protector

Malverno will always try to protect the innocent and misunderstood, and of course the cute! Even if he puts himself at a disadvantage, he can usually be counted on to act in order to protect those he deems in need.

Sweet Tooth

Malverno has a famous love of sweets and treats. While it's not likely to make him lose all leave of his senses, his love for these things can be used against him.
