2020.08.05 - Cutscene: Earth Has Incoming!
The red and blue streaks left Earth's atmosphere behind and accelerated into space, the life support aspect of their costume generators automatically kicking on. Skyboy activated his comlink and radioed back to the Hypership. "Robin, Kon and I are going local coms only. As soon as we see what's out there, we will be in touch." Nodding to Kon, Skyboy accelerated into deeper space by his side. A few minutes away from Earth, several million miles away, they banked to pass through the main asteroid belt, planning to circle Mars and come back around the approaching U.F.O.
Skyboy glanced at his life-mate. "All of this reminds me of old times. Flying through space, solving some mystery." He paused and then laughed brightly. "Likely having to kick the sprock out of something after they just refuse to stand down, or listen to reason." Dodging around a small asteroid, he added. "Because throwing the gun."
Superboy shakes his head, not so much because Knick will see it as because sometimes one just has to. "If evil weren't dumb," he grouses over the comlink, "we'd be able to retire!" But despite the potentially grim situation, he finds a smile spreading across his face as he thinks of what Knick's said. A beat later, he adds, "Yeah, though. Like old times. And if this creepy-lookin' thing is here to start trouble, let's kick its stupid butt!"
Laughing, Skyboy accelerated, as the two Teens of Steel dodged and weaved through the oncoming asteroids.
Passing around the far side of Mars, the Teens of Steel looped back. With constant acceleration through space, they had been flying for almost an hour. Flying through space at roughly one quarter the speed of light, though, they began to slow. Skyboy's eyes shimmered faintly with blue white motes, his vision magnifying hundreds of times over. There in the distance he could see it, a massive comet--largely hollow, it appeared. Undulating along the surface, and beneath it, were rivers and pools of some black, viscous material. Massive streamers of the same trailed behind the comet, which was being driven forward by massive thrusters.
Skyboy focused his attention on those thrusters and his eyes went wide, even as massive tendrils of the black sludge lobbed off of the comet, heading for earth. Looking at Kon, Knick could see his lifemate looking back at him, knowing that they were thinking the same thing. Even so, Skyboy said it out loud with a slight tone of dread, "Apokolips. The design of those thrusters, they are from Apokolips. We need to get Seth, and maybe Con, too. I have a bad feeling we are going to need help with this!" Altering their course to try fly around the comet, Skyboy started broadcasting to Robin on the Hypership. "Tim! Come in! Earth has incoming! Something from Apokolips!" He hoped they would make it back in time, but the comet had quite the head start.
