From day one, Remy was physically marked by the distinctiveness of his genes. Abandoned at a young age for his unique eyes, he was taken in by a guild of thieves and trained in their ways of doing things. Eventually, he ended up getting into the circles of more high-profile adventurers like the X-Men. Generally, Remy tries to do what's right, but that is a pretty relative scale. Got to look out for number one, 'cause nobody else gonna do it.

Personality

Remy is a charmer, and he owes his success in that to the fact that he always seems genuine. There's a lot of affection and warmth to him, and he's very good at reading people, as well as gauging them by casual conversation. He can play the game of social interactions, and he's very good at it. Deep down, behind all that grinning and flirting, there are some pretty deep holes in his heart. He was abandoned by his parents at birth, which weighs heavy on him, even though he still has great affection for his adoptive father. But even in that case, he ended up separated from his family.

Plain-spoken even if he does sometimes switch between languages, Remy is usually very honest to the people who know him. He is loyal to a fault, though his trust doesn't come easily. His life has been one of hardship and challenge, and it is difficult for him to really trust anyone. Because of this, trust is a commodity with him, and it's one that means a lot to him. Accordingly, losing trust with someone he's worked hard at establishing it with is devastating to him.

Remy enjoys life as best he can, and that can slant him towards somewhat ill-considered decisions at times. If he has a backup, he can afford to take chances...not that it would stop him if he didn't. He is something of a hedonist when he can afford to be, and he knows how to appreciate even the simplest of pleasures, owing to his difficult youth.

Background

Remy was born with his burning red eyes, one of only a handful of mutants to manifest a mutation from birth, rather than due to some galvanizing event later in life. Because of this, he was abandoned by his parents, though he was almost immediately thereafter stolen from the hospital by a guild of thieves, who believed him to be "le diable blanc", a figure foretold to bring peace between them and their enemies. He learned from the thieves and, when he was barely entering his teens, tried to pick the pocket of the guild's patriarch, who promptly adopted Remy as his own son.

For peace, Remy was engaged to a girl named Bella Donna, from an enemy guild. They were married, but they did not stay together long, and the relationship was one of convenience and tension. After Remy was targeted by members of that guild and forced to defend himself, the situation deteriorated and he was pressured to leave New Orleans.

Eventually, he came to join the X-Men after he helped one of their number, Storm. Always something of a free spirit, Gambit comes and goes but tries to be as reliable as it's possible for him to be. He's been with the X-Men for some time now, and it's made him something of a respectable guy. At least, he likes to think so.

SKILLS

ACROBATICS - Competent: Thanks to his powers and natural inclinations, as well as years of training, Remy is excellent at all kinds of acrobatics. He can accomplish feats that most cannot, and more easily than most.

MANIPULATION - Competent: From con artistry to trickery to subterfuge and more, Remy does well when he can affect people through some sensory appeal or misdirection. The shell game is child's play, and he'll know which card you picked before you even get it out of his hand. He's sure he's met you somewhere before, and he just heard an interesting fact about that very same obscure study. Crazy coincidence! Do you think you could do a little something for him? Remy's innocent as a babe, just look in his eyes!

MARTIAL ARTS - Competent: Remy is an excellent hand-to-hand fighter, especially when equipped with a staff of some kind. He is especially good at the bo, but he can improvise with any similar weapon and have equivalent proficiency. He is also excellent at thrown weapons, both in terms of accuracy and effectiveness. Even unarmed, Remy is good at making the most of a tough situation and can hold his own in a fight.

THIEF - Expert: Remy is a master thief, world-class and with few peers. Picking pockets is child's play to him. Even treasures with ridiculously extensive security measures to protect them are within his capability of stealing...if he chooses to. He is one of a handful of people with the training combined with natural talent and ability to be able to put hands on almost anything that is available.

POWERS

DIVINATION - Basic: Remy has an understated gift for divination, specifically cartomancy. He only rarely uses it, which makes it unreliable and him less likely to rely on it for any degree of accuracy.

ENERGY CONTROL - Enhanced: Remy is able to manipulate the energy of virtually any object he touches. This has a number of applications, but the most direct one is introducing molecular instability to items, which makes them volatile and prone to explosion, especially when thrown with some force. Their shape also seems to be given a destructive edge, as playing cards become able to cut through substances that would normally resist damage. He can, alternatively, simply affect the cohesion of something he touches, causing it to break down without the need for explosion.

Charged items naturally lose their charge over time, so if left alone, items Remy charges slowly become less unstable. How long it takes depends on how large of an object it is; a playing card can retain a charge for longer than an automobile. The larger the item, the more energy it takes (and thus focus and fatigue) to charge it, and the faster it loses its explosive instability.

Remy has a much harder time charging living things other than himself and tends not to bother trying to affect other living things with his powers. He has standards and all.

ENHANCED SYSTEMS - Basic: Remy's energy powers also afford him enhancements naturally, such as boosted speed and reflexes, flexibility, dexterity, and even endurance and toughness. These all come as bonuses, but he can further enhance himself by focusing his power in one area. For example, if he needs a burst of speed, he can charge himself to achieve that. This also extends to healing, and miraculously, Remy can heal even mortal wounds by focusing his power on healing and recovery.

Note, however, that concentrating power on a system means he isn't focusing on anything else or charging anything else. He must keep his power focused on the task of healing his body throughout the process, for example, for it to heal, just as he must focus on enhancing his speed beyond its usual levels to maintain that. His systems can only be boosted occasionally, not constantly or repeatedly, without risk of exhaustion, serious injury, or critical failure.

ADVANTAGES

STATIC The energies in Remy's body make it more challenging for any telepathic contact or attack. He can enhance the effect by charging an object that remains around his head. It essentially produces a static that makes it harder, but by no means impossible, for him to be targeted by any sort of mental assault.

STREETWISE Having spent most of his life on the questionable side of the law and in grey areas all around, Remy is able to recognize telltale signs of kindred spirits, knows to look for signs of things most wouldn't, and is able to present himself as a knowledgeable person to anyone who might put him under scrutiny. He can fit in most anywhere and can find useful information when he needs to, especially if it's related to his expertise. So finding a fence, for example, is easy as pie for Remy.

X-MEN Remy is a member in good standing of the X-Men, and he is accordingly able to call upon contacts and resources that affiliation would provide him. He is also able to use this in order to show respectability to other heroic types who recognize the X-Men as heroes.

WEAKNESSES

PHOTOSENSITIVE Perhaps ironically, Gambit's eyes are extremely sensitive to light. Flashbangs, flares, and other sudden changes in light levels can even cause him physical pain, and he typically takes longer to recover from sharp changes in light than an average person.

PHYSICAL MUTATION Remy possesses a physical mutation that makes it difficult to conceal his identity or escape recognition. His eyes are unique, and he can relatively easily be picked out for his unique features. While most of the time, wearing sunglasses can hide this, sometimes that isn't a possibility.

TACTILE Remy has to be in direct physical contact with something, in order to affect it with his powers.

TARGET In his life of many associations and connections, Remy has made some powerful enemies. He has to be careful sometimes, in certain places and around certain people, and he can never really be sure that anything he does hasn't been noticed by someone or other.

THIEF Remy is a known thief, and his level of ability means that he can't afford to be too high-profile if he's not doing something on the level. This may also affect his ability to be taken seriously by those who recognize him or anyone who finds out about that part of his life.
