Kane is the offspring of a devil and a human, who works as an investigator in Port-Au-Feu. He's a scrappy dude, and he knows how to get things done. Usually.

Background

Kane was born from a devil mother and a human father, though he only lived with them for the first couple of years of his life. He remembers very little of either, since early on, he was given into the care of the Carnaval de la Lune Minuit, an old-fashioned and beloved circus based in Port-Au-Feu. Unknown to most, it was and is a place largely controlled by vampires and some other supernatural beings.

Kane's mother and father vanished from the city, and at the time, the city had certain issues with secrecy and corruption, resulting in it being very difficult for Kane to find out information about them as he grew older. He opted to stay with the Carnaval, though he didn't perform and instead helped with things behind the scenes. Eventually, he decided that if he was going to investigate the disappearance of his parents and other old business, he might as well make some money doing it. He never formally made a business, but when he put the word out, people started showing up. Kane found himself looking into more and more things and, sometimes, finding out a detail here or a bit of something there that he could apply to the vast puzzle of what drove his parents from Port-Au-Feu, and where they might be now.

SKILLS

Acrobatics - Novice Level

Kane has trained with some of the circus acrobats, but he doesn't possess exceptional skills in this. He has, however, applied his learned skills to his life, which has helped him in a variety of ways. Just learning how to fall properly probably saved him some pain and time.

Business - Novice Level

Kane can run stands at the Carnaval, and he's decent at managing the resources and costs of a small business. He could probably get the help of some of his circus family, if he wanted to make a legitimate, concerted try at it. Presently, he does okay and can keep himself nicely afloat.

Fighting - Competent Level

Kane is good at fighting, but he's not a trained professional. He will use every advantage possible in a conflict, and it takes some ability to be able to recognize what those are and when to use them. He's best at unarmed combat similar to brawling, but he's also become very good at using the Stygian.

Investigation - Competent Level

Piloting - Novice Level

Kane can drive basic vehicles that most people can: cars, carts, motorcycles, motorized scooters, and basic boats. He's not very good at, nor is he trained in, driving things like big rigs, yachts, helicopters, or anything like that. He can be expected to get from point A to point B without disaster in a basic car, for example.

ABILITIES

Power: Dark Sight - Basic Level

Due to his heritage, Kane can see better in darkness and low light than most humans and naturally has almost catlike sight in darkness. It's not very detailed or easy to make out things at a distance, but it's far better than a human's usual ability.

Power: Devil Inside - Enhanced+ Level

In times of need, Kane can call upon the inherent power of his heritage. This causes his eyes to go black, with the irises turning ruby red, but there's no other visual indicator; his aura does change, to those sensitive to such things, and obviously betrays his mixed blood. Calling upon the power given to him by his mother, Kane becomes stronger, faster, more durable, comprehends things more quickly and easily, and heals faster (all up to the level of Enhanced+). This lasts only for a few minutes at most, and it requires some time between doing for a recharge of sorts. He could probably do it once every couple of hours in a day, at maximum. If he did, it would demand at least several hours of rest to recover from the greater expenditure of energy, or some equivalent healing.

Power: Durability - Enhanced Level

Due to Kane's heritage, he can take a lot more punishment than a regular human. He's not invulnerable per se, but his healing combined with the increased toughness of his body make him able to resist damage, and these things in tandem also help him to bounce back from an assault. He is still hurt by things like gunfire, but a handgun won't typically leave much more than a painful bruise. It still hurts, and armor-piercing bullets can definitely cause some serious damage, but low-level weapons are nothing to cause him undue concern. A switchblade can still cut him, but it's unlikely to penetrate deeply enough to do significant damage.

Power: Healing - Enhanced Level

Kane heals faster than most, and he can recover from worse injuries than most. A small cut will take negligible time to disappear, and even a serious, deep cut that would require stitches for most will usually be gone after a day at most. Reattaching limbs is more time-consuming, as any serious injury would be. Broken bones don't tend to take more than a couple of days, depending on the severity of the break. Kane does not typically suffer from human sickness.

Power: Speed - Enhanced Level

Kane's enhanced speed is definitely at the lower end of the spectrum, but he can move faster than a typical human and can take in details, react, and reflexively move much more quickly than humans typically do.

Power: Strength - Enhanced Level

Kane is stronger than a typical human and operates, without effort, on the level of the strongest humans. When he puts his back into it, he can accomplish some impressive things, though it's unlikely he could just punch through thick metal or anything without help of some kind. He can almost effortlessly crash through sheet rock, though, and bending a metal pipe wouldn't make him sweat too much.

Tech: Stygian - Enhanced Level

The Stygian is a magnificent transforming item created by the technology and magical knowledge of the devils. Known for their love of accumulating knowledge, the devils who crafted the Stygian designed it to be versatile and intuitive. It also is nearly indestructible, aside from destructive power of devastating levels or high-level rituals unknown to most; the combination of scientific application and magical experimentation resulted in a truly formidable thing.

The Stygian usually changes its form between a fairly large dagger, a scythe, and an expanding shield. It can be changed by a simple mental focus, though it works best in the hands of someone with devil blood in them. To take another form, it would have to be the concentrated will of its wielder, and that form would have to be clear in their minds. Like a magic spellworking or ritual, it would require the focused application of will and energy to do. Typically, however, it only goes between the three forms, and very easily for anyone familiar enough with the Stygian.

The blades can cut through most material fairly well, though denser or tougher material will require more strength behind it. It can cut through thick steel, but not quickly. It cannot cut something like diamond. As a shield, the Stygian can turn away destructive power up to and including most bombs, though higher degrees of destructive power can challenge it, and it might not be able to shield against all damage. The Stygian also prioritizes life in its protection, so non-living material is not usually protected if it must make a decision on what to defend; in the case of a particularly potent explosion, the Stygian might be able to entirely protect Kane, but it won't protect the clothes he's wearing.

ADVANTAGES

Half-Devil

Most people, if they have the capability to find out that Kane is half-devil in heritage, will afford him a certain amount of respect. Even full-blooded devils are more likely to share exclusive information with someone they view as similar. Mages or those conversant in occult matters will tend to give him a wide berth, or at the least not underestimate him.

WEAKNESSES

Half-Devil

Devils don't have the same reputation as demons, though they are often confused for each other. Those ignorant of the true nature of most devils may assume that they are evil or harmful, and that Kane's blood tempts him to evil. Those who know better may still see devils as obsessive accumulators of knowledge, for which the ends completely justify the means. On a physical level, if Kane should tap into his devil power, the whites of his eyes turn black and his grey irises turn red. Though this is easily covered or hidden, it's not always a possibility and would be a little challenging to explain away to anyone who knew better.

Masochist

Despite everything, Kane's something of a masochist. Mostly it's that pain makes him feel more alive, and he doesn't really realize he tends to seek it out. This can sometimes result in him taking damage that he doesn't strictly have to, and occasionally it makes him throw himself into a situation he probably shouldn't.

Troublemaker

Kane is often tempted into making trouble for those who he feels deserve it. He's not too hard to provoke into conflict, and he's most satisfied by the direct application of force. But he'll totally also throw himself into a campaign of stirring up trouble for a foe.
